Resources are tools, God is our guide.
Below you will find lists of resources to help as additions to our weekend message topics. Keep checking back as this list will continue to grow as we journey in our faith. As with any resource, we must read and learn from these with the Biblical lenses of wisdom, discernment, and humility. Most books are available through retailers like Amazon. You can also check them out at your local library. To find a library near you visit the Fort Vancouver Library online.

Making Sense of Your Story by Adam Young – In Make Sense of Your Story, trauma therapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker Adam Young helps you explore your personal story so you can understand how your experiences have shaped your brain–which, in turn, allows you to understand why your present day-to-day life looks and feels the way it does. He shows you how to confront and process the story of your family of origin, your sexual story, the story your body is telling you, your cultural story, your story with God, and more with kindness rather than judgment so that you can experience healing, self-acceptance, and release.
Redeeming Heartache by Dan Allender and Cathy Loerzel – With a clear, biblically trustworthy method, Allender and Loerzel walk you through a journey of profound inner transformation–from the shame and hurt of old emotional wounds to true freedom and healing. Drawn from modern research and their pioneering work at The Allender Center, they will help you identify your core trauma in one of the three outcast archetypes–the widow, orphan, or stranger–and chart your path of growth into the God-given roles of priest, prophet, or leader. This book will help you learn:
– What to do about feeling out-of-place and directionless
– How your coping mechanisms create a false sense of health
– How to embrace your divine calling and find lasting reconciliation
– How your heart wounds are your unique invitation to true strength and purpose.
To Be Told by Dan Allender – In this insightful book, therapist and professor Dan Allender shows you how to listen to the stories of your life and identify the themes that God has written there. As you begin to understand both the hope and the heartache, you will gain a clearer sense of the meaning that God has written into every detail of who you are. You’ll also see how he invites you to join him in coauthoring the rest of your story. God is your Author, and he is showing you how to follow him into the future.
To Be Told Online Course (Dan Allender) – Our stories shape and influence every dimension of our daily life and relationships. Knowing the impact of our stories and finding God’s redemptive work within them is vital for emotional, relational, and spiritual health. To Be Told is far more than the popularized movement to “know your story.” It is an invitation to truth-telling, healing lament, deep soulfulness, and lasting change. Featuring 3 sessions and 9 videos with compelling teaching from Dr. Dan Allender and a downloadable journal with reflection questions to go deeper, this online course invites you to explore how the goodness and pain in your life have shaped you. This journey opens the door to transforming your future.
SEE: Trauma, Identity, and Spiritual Development (Byron Kehler) – We aren’t born with a self-image. It is formed during childhood, influenced by our environment as well as those around us. Childhood hurts, and trauma create a challenge in learning to love ourselves and feel secure in who we are. The SEE workshop will explain why this happens, what gets in the way, and how we learn to love ourselves more fully so we can develop a healthier and more accurate self-image. This 2.5-hour Workshop is offered both as an on-demand video course and a periodic in-person workshop.
